“Three tons of pea gravel came from Rhode Island Rock Supply for the outdoor seating area behind my coffee shop in Bristol. Customers love how it looks with the string lights, smooth enough that chairs slide easily without digging in, and it has not faded after a full season in direct sun. Cleanup after a spill is just a quick rake and it looks new again.”

Freeze and thaw, heavy rain, and tight lots can make drainage planning important around Rhode Island landscape work. Pea Stone lets rainfall pass through its rounded pieces instead of collecting on top, which suits outdoor areas where a loose, permeable finish is wanted. Its smooth texture is comfortable for walks, patio edges, and places where people spend time outside.

Inland till and ledge can behave differently from sandy shore ground, so the material should be treated as a surface layer, not a cure for poor drainage below. Set it on ground that has been readied for the project, with drainage directed toward the intended outlet where needed. That approach is especially useful when a dry well is part of the site plan.

Common Uses

Patios & Outdoor Living Areas

Natural pea gravel gives you a permeable surface for patios and outdoor seating spaces. It feels smooth underfoot and lets water pass through. Combine it with flagstone, brick edging, and furniture for an easygoing outdoor setting suited to small Rhode Island lots.

Garden Walks & Paths

Create a relaxed route through planted areas with pea gravel. A border of steel, stone, or brick gives the path a clear edge and keeps the gravel out of nearby plantings.

Playgrounds & Play Areas

Rounded pea gravel is gentler underfoot in children's play spaces than angular aggregate. It drains well, does not attract insects as wood mulch can, and gives the area a natural ground cover.

Drainage & Ground Cover

Place pea gravel by foundations, below downspouts, in swales, or where turf does poorly. Water can move through the stone instead of collecting on the surface. On coastal lots, it can help direct drainage toward a dry well rather than a neighbouring property.

Why Choose Pea Stone

Comfortable & Safe

Pea gravel's rounded, smooth stones are comfortable to walk across, including barefoot. With no sharp edges, it is also a practical surface for play spaces and busy walking areas.

Beautiful Natural Colors

Warm, earthy tones in pea gravel bring texture and color to the landscape. The color is part of the stone itself, rather than a dye that can fade, chip, or wash away.

Excellent Drainage

Water can move through the evenly sized pea gravel rather than pooling at the surface. Use it around foundations, patios, and garden beds where drainage needs to flow toward a dry well instead of across a neighboring lot.

Low Maintenance

Pea gravel does not decompose each year like wood mulch. It can maintain its look and purpose for years with very little care, and a garden-hose rinse from time to time helps refresh it.

Needs a border to stay put

Spread two tons of pea gravel under the deck at a rental in Portsmouth to keep the mud from splashing up on the siding. Looks clean and the tenants like that it does not track in like the bark mulch did before. Without any edging along the grass line it has migrated a foot or two into the yard, so I will be adding a border before next season.

Round stone stayed put after all

A homeowner out on Jamestown wanted a fire pit patio that stayed barefoot friendly for her grandkids, which meant pea gravel instead of the crushed stone I usually spec. Two tons of the 3/8 inch went down smooth and round underfoot, no sharp edges anywhere.

Comfortable underfoot around the fire pit

Filled a fire pit patio with pea gravel, about a ton and a half, over paver base in Westerly. Smooth and rounded, comfortable barefoot, and the color stayed bright through a few storms. Simple weekend project with my son.
