Bulk Gravel and Aggregate Delivery in Rhode Island
Find your town: all 60 Rhode Island cities we deliver to
Rhode Island Rock Supply runs bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Rhode Island, sized with the calculator on each product page. Start with processed gravel, the compacted base town road standards call for under a finished surface.
This is a small state that changes ground fast. Stony till sits over granite and gneiss west, and deep outwash sand runs under the South County plain.
Roughly 384 miles of tidal shoreline puts storm tides into low ground around the whole bay.
Materials Delivered Across Rhode Island
Rhode Island yards sell base material by local name, and that is how the material is listed here. Processed gravel, also called process, is aggregate crushed or screened from natural boulder, cobble and gravel.
Processed gravel is what a town road standard stacks above bank run gravel borrow. It builds driveways, parking pads, walks and shed bases.
Order Processed Gravel for that work, in 3/4 processed or the coarser 1 1/2 inch processed.
Bank run gravel is unprocessed pit sand and gravel, dug and screened, not crushed. It goes in as bulk fill, grade raising, and the first compacted lift under a processed gravel base.
Order it as Bank Run Gravel.
Crushed stone comes in inch sizes here, because Rhode Island yards sell 3/8, 3/4 and 1 1/2 inch far more often than numbered gradations. 3/4" Crushed Stone handles drainage beds, drive surfacing and trench backfill.
What yards call blue stone is crushed grey-blue granite and gneiss, and it works for drives and exposed stone surfaces. For fine drainage, pipe bedding and tight paths, ask for 3/8" Crushed Stone.
Stone dust, or screenings, is the default bedding and joint filler under pavers, bluestone and flagstone. Order Stone Dust for flatwork and packed garden paths.
Pea stone covers walkways, play areas, drip edges and drainage backfill. Rhode Island says pea stone far more often than Natural Pea Gravel, so order Pea Stone.
For drainage and heavy water, order #57 Stone for French drains, drywells and concrete aggregate. On wet ground or under hard standing, Railroad Ballast takes the coarse work.
Armor shoreline banks, salt pond edges and culvert outlets with RipRap, sold in the 4 to 10 inch range. For beds and dry creek beds, order River Rock or heavier Large River Rock.
Rhode Island landscapers call topsoil loam and buy it screened, often to 1/2 inch. Order Top Soil for lawns and bed prep, and Garden Soil where a bed needs more body.
Sand rounds out a load. Mason Sand, or brick sand, mixes mortar and beds pavers; Washed Sand mixes concrete and levels under paver patios.
There is also Driveway Gravel, Walkway Gravel, Fill Dirt and Shredded Mulch.
Ground and Climate Across Rhode Island
Base, driveway and paver work runs from the spring thaw into late fall, with the longest season on the islands and the shore and the shortest in the western hill towns. Frozen ground stops compaction in midwinter.
Frost depth in Rhode Island is 40 inches by the state code table, with New Shoreham on Block Island the one 30 inch exception. The town building official sets footing depth.
In the Narragansett Bay lowland and metropolitan Providence, glacial till and pockets of valley sand and gravel sit over Narragansett Basin sandstone, shale and conglomerate, with a lot of made ground. Dig depth is unpredictable lot to lot.
Blackstone Valley and the northern mill towns sit on Blackstone Group bedrock, with stratified sand and gravel terraces on the valley floor. Mill villages sit on cut and filled ground next to the river.
The western uplands run granite and gneiss under stony glacial till with ledge and boulders close to the surface. Ground rises west to Jerimoth Hill at 812 feet.
East Bay and the Narragansett Bay islands carry thin till over rock, with outcrop at the shore and low ground grading into salt marsh. South County outwash plain and coastal ponds sit on deep glacial outwash sand and gravel.
That sand drains freely and compacts differently from the till the rest of the state sits on. Dense till sheds snowmelt and thaw water in the uplands while outwash takes it straight down.
Storm surge and waves from nor'easters and tropical systems drive erosion, worst on the open south shore where barrier beaches and bluffs retreat. Inland, stream banks scour and culverts wash out after heavy rain and thaw.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Rhode Island
What is the difference between crushed stone and Natural Pea Gravel?
Crushed stone is angular rock broken from larger material, sold here in inch sizes such as 3/8, 3/4 and 1 1/2 inch. Pea stone is small rounded stone, often 3/8 inch, for walkways, play areas and drip edges. The angular material locks into a surface; rounded stone stays loose underfoot.
Should I order material by the ton or by the yard?
Both work, and the calculator on each product page handles either one. Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, so pick whichever unit suits the job and let the calculator size it. Then choose a delivery date at checkout.
Which stone is best for drainage in Rhode Island?
Clean, washed stone in an inch size does the drainage work. Order Drain Rock for French drains, drywells and foundation perimeter drains, or #57 Stone for French drains, drywells and concrete aggregate. On severe drainage and wet ground, Railroad Ballast is the coarse option.
