“Our Federal Hill grade used to slide every rain when it was loose gravel. Eight tons of 3/4 inch crushed stone locked in tight instead. Rhode Island Rock Supply quoted a price, and the driver dumped it on the grade.”

Everything You Need to Know About 3/4" Crushed Stone

Size and Grading

Size
Approximately 3/4 inch
Type
Angular crushed stone

A small lot can leave limited space for water management around a drive, patio, or drainage area. Inland glacial till and ledge may restrict drainage, while shore settings can be sandier. Deep frost and repeated freezing and thawing can also expose weak support below finished surfaces, especially where runoff must be directed toward a dry well.

With its broken, angular shape, 3/4" Crushed Stone settles into a dense supporting course when compacted. It is suited to driveway bases, construction support, and drainage work where water needs room to pass through the material. Place the stone below the surface treatment, then compact it thoroughly to help limit movement from traffic and seasonal ground change.

Common Uses

Driveway & Road Base

For processed gravel driveways and road subbases, 3/4-inch crushed stone forms a compacted layer beneath the surface. It supports vehicle traffic and helps limit surface wear over time.

Construction & Building Foundations

Place 3/4-inch crushed stone beneath residential footings and commercial building pads to create a stable structural layer. The material carries loads and lets water move away from foundation work.

Drainage Systems

For French drains, utility trenches, and stormwater work, 3/4-inch crushed stone provides open channels for water. Its angular, evenly sized pieces also hold the layer together.

Retaining Wall Backfill

Use 3/4-inch stone behind block, timber, and stone retaining walls for a backfill layer that drains water and supports the wall. The size keeps the material stable while leaving room for flow.

Why Choose 3/4" Crushed Stone

Superior Compaction

Compacting 3/4-inch crushed stone locks its angular pieces into a firm base. The resulting surface holds up against heavy loads, shifting, rutting, and erosion.

Excellent Drainage

Open gaps between evenly graded 3/4-inch stone let water move down through the layer. This helps limit standing water, ice buildup, and moisture damage near foundations and other structures.

Everyday Uses

3/4-inch crushed stone works for driveways, drainage, and landscaping. It also fits many residential and construction applications.

Material Planning

Plan the amount of 3/4-inch crushed stone around the depth and area of the installation. Use the material where its drainage and compacted base properties suit the project.

Fixed the potholes, fixed the invoice

Managed the reorder of ten tons of 3/4 inch stone to fix the potholes in the shared driveway at our condo association in North Providence. The only snag was the invoice first listed half the tonnage we actually got delivered, and it took a phone call the next day to get the paperwork straightened out.

More fines at the bottom of the pile

Spec'd seven tons of 3/4 inch stone as a base layer under a patio and drainage swale for a client out in Burrillville. Locks in tight once it's compacted and gave us a rock solid surface to set the pavers on. The bottom third of the pile had more fines mixed in than the top, so we spent extra time raking it even before we could compact.

Stone that stopped sliding downhill

Our access road up to the barn in West Warwick sits on a grade, and every spring the old gravel slid back down to the bottom. It locked together within a week of horse and trailer traffic, and unlike the stone from our last quarry, none of it has migrated downhill.

No gap between the two trucks

Two trucks pulled up to our driveway in East Providence twenty minutes apart, which had my neighbor convinced we'd been double billed until the second one dumped exactly where the first left off. Eighteen tons of three quarter inch crushed stone went down over the base that kept washing soft every spring thaw. Rhode Island Rock Supply's dispatcher had warned us the load might split into two runs because of the narrow street, so nobody panicked about the wait. The stone graded out flat by dinnertime, and my son's truck can finally turn around without spinning gravel into the neighbor's yard.

Federal Hill Grade Finally Locked In

Our Federal Hill grade used to slide every rain when it was loose gravel. Eight tons of 3/4 inch crushed stone locked in tight instead. Rhode Island Rock Supply quoted a price, and the driver dumped it on the grade.
