“Ordered eighteen tons of number four for a base course on a new build in Smithfield. The Rhode Island Rock Supply tri-axle got down the shared driveway without tearing up the neighbor's lawn, which the last yard I used couldn't manage. Compacted hard under the plate and the topcoat sits solid now, even after the November rain we got.”

Angular crushed stone

Putting #4 Crushed Stone on top as the finished driving surface is a common mistake. Its open, coarse structure is better for the supporting part of a project, where water needs to drain and traffic needs a firm foundation. Inland glacial till and ledge can limit drainage below grade, while shore soils behave differently. Small lots can make drainage planning especially important when runoff is directed toward a dry well.

For a driveway or parking area, install this material as the lower support course and use a tighter aggregate above it for the driving finish. The open structure helps water move downward toward the planned drainage area instead of remaining beneath traffic. #4 Crushed Stone also suits erosion-control work around slopes, ditches, and coastal-lot drainage where runoff needs control.

No more calls about puddles

The entrance to our rental property off the county road in North Kingstown washes out every time we get a nor'easter, and I finally got tired of patching it with bags of stone from the hardware store that never lasted a season. Ordered twenty five tons of the number four this time and had it delivered on a Tuesday morning window that the dispatcher actually kept. The tandem backed in tight along the fence line and dumped exactly where the stakes were without tearing up the mailbox post. Six months and one big storm later the grade is holding and tenants have stopped calling about puddles at the end of the driveway.

A few chunks needed the sledgehammer

Eight tons went down over the worst ruts in our driveway in Warwick before my daughter's wedding. The driver dumped it in three spots exactly where I flagged with stakes, which saved my back.

Firmed up the lane to the coops

We needed twelve tons to firm up the lane out to the chicken coops after the ground stayed soft all spring in Exeter. Rhode Island Rock Supply got the truck back to the barn without getting stuck, which is more than I can say for the last delivery from a landscaper in town.

Finally stopped the spring washout

Our dirt lane off the property in Coventry turns to a river every March. Three tons of the number four stone filled the washout by the culvert and it has held through two more downpours since. No more ruts to dodge.
