“Rhode Island Rock Supply dropped four tons of 89 stone right where the mason marked the drainage strip along our foundation in Hopkinton. Small and rounded enough that it never fights the shovel, and it fills in between the larger drain rock we already had down there like it was made for it. Two heavy rains later and the basement window wells are staying dry for the first time since we bought the house.”

Type
Angular crushed stone

Mistaking this material for free-draining rock can cause trouble on a small Rhode Island lot, where water often must be directed toward a dry well. Inland till and ledge, shore sand, and deep frost each affect the supporting work, but #89 Crushed Stone is best reserved for confined finish areas. Freeze-thaw movement can also disturb a surface when the preparation beneath it is not suited to the ground conditions.

Its crushed angular shape and fines help it pack into a firm mass instead of remaining open. Use it in paver gaps or as a flagstone setting material, and compact it after placement for a settled finish. It also fits concrete mixes where a fine, compactable aggregate is needed. Keep the drainage path and dry-well work separate from this close-fitting material.

Common Uses

Paver and Flagstone Joints

Because the fine material brushes into narrow gaps, it helps hold pavers in position.

Chip Seal Roads

Angular fines help bind the cover aggregate in chip-seal road work.

Concrete Mixes

When a mix design calls for smaller stone, use it as the coarse aggregate.

Path Base

Under pavers or stone paths, it creates a flat layer for support.

Why Choose #89 Crushed Stone

Dense Base

Fines fill the gaps, allowing this material to compact into a firm surface.

Versatile

Use this material for joint filling, bedding layers, concrete, or surface treatment work.

Clean Finish

Its even, small stone profile creates a tidy final appearance.

Easy to Place

It can be distributed and brushed into confined areas with little work.

Finally satisfied a nitpicky customer

A patio customer in Portsmouth argued over every line of the estimate until we agreed on eight hundred forty dollars for six tons of number 89 to bed the pavers. He stood by the tailgate most of the afternoon, checking that the screed board stayed dead level before he'd let me start setting stone. Once the joints were swept and compacted, the surface sat tight enough that his wife walked across in heels without a wobble, and he finally stopped hovering long enough to sign off on the invoice.

Patio pavers set clean and tight

A ton and a half of 89 stone went under the pavers for a small patio in Charlestown. It packs in tight and drains fast, even during the wet stretch we had in June. Looks clean against the foundation too.

Wanders out of the dog run

Used three tons of 89 stone for drainage around the foundation of our new barn in West Greenwich, plus a bit extra for a small dog run by the porch. Drains beautifully and looks a lot nicer than the crushed stuff we had before.
