“Running a small marina in Jamestown means dealing with wake erosion along the bulkhead every season, and two years ago we finally committed to armoring the worst stretch instead of patching it with whatever fill we had around. Rhode Island Rock Supply barged part of the order and trucked the rest, about twenty tons, timing the drop around our tide schedule. The stone locked together along the slope almost immediately once the excavator worked it into place, and unlike the loose fieldstone from the previous owner, nothing has slid into the channel since. Slip renters have commented on how much more solid the walk down to the docks feels now.”

Everything You Need to Know About RipRap
Size and Grading
- Size
- 4 inches to 12 inches and up
- Type
- Large, heavy stone
RipRap leaves a plainly visible heavy stone surface after placement, which suits Rhode Island shorelines, banks, and drainage areas exposed to flow. That appearance holds up as a functional protective layer rather than blending into bare soil. On small lots near Narragansett Bay or inland areas with glacial till and ledge, directing runoff away from exposed ground can matter greatly.
Set RipRap along the bank, slope, shoreline, or channel face where water is expected to travel. Deep frost and repeated freeze-thaw cycling can leave soil exposed as conditions change, especially around a drainage route leading toward a dry well. The stone is used to armor that surface so moving water works against the stone instead of directly against the soil.

Customer Reviews
Dam finally holds its shape
Our farm pond dam in Richmond had been slumping on the downhill side for a couple of years, so we finally brought in ten tons of riprap to armor the whole face. Sits much heavier than the fieldstone we tried piling on ourselves a while back, which kept shifting every spring thaw, unlike what Rhode Island Rock Supply delivered this time. This is the first winter the dam has held its shape without needing any patching.

Erosion finally stopped creeping toward the patio
Eight tons of riprap went along the eroding bank behind our place on the bay in Portsmouth. Heavy enough to stay through a couple of nor'easters, and the erosion creeping toward the patio has stopped. Money well spent.

Browner than the photos suggested
Fixed a washed out culvert on the private road our beach association maintains in Narragansett with seven tons of riprap packed around the pipe ends. Stops the ditch from cutting deeper every time we get a heavy rain, and the road committee is relieved they do not have to regrade every spring anymore. Color came in more brown and less gray than the photos suggested, which stands out a bit against the existing stone nearby.
