“Three tons of stone screenings from Rhode Island Rock Supply went in for bedding under a flagstone patio job in Cumberland. Packs tighter and sets the stones more level than the mason sand a lot of guys default to, and it does not wash out from between the joints the way sand can after a hard rain. Client's patio has not had a single stone come loose after a full season of foot traffic.”

Stone Dust fits the finish portion of a patio, walk, or other hardscape installation, where small grade adjustments matter. Fine crushed stone material settles into a dense layer under moisture and compaction, providing an even place for pavers, brick, flagstone, and natural stone. It can also help bring a subgrade into final shape before concrete work.
Deep frost and freeze-thaw movement make the supporting work especially important on Rhode Island lots. Inland glacial till and ledge can differ sharply from sandy ground near Narragansett Bay, but the finish material should remain above a properly built support layer in either setting. Once that support is shaped for the site, rake Stone Dust into an even layer, dampen it lightly, and compact it before placing the surface material. This helps keep the final work level while drainage is handled below, including projects where runoff is directed toward a dry well.

Common Uses
Bedding for Pavers and Flagstone
For pavers and flagstone, use stone screenings as a leveling layer. Once compacted, the fine material makes an even, firm bed that helps limit movement and settlement in the finished surface.
Preparing and Leveling a Base
Before you pour concrete, add decking, or set sheds and hot tubs, spread stone screenings to correct uneven subgrade. Its fine texture settles into shallow depressions and compacts into a smooth, even foundation.
Filling Paver Joints
Brush screenings into the spaces around pavers, flagstone, or brick. The particles pack into the gaps to help hold the units in position and reduce weed growth.
Paths with a Compacted Finish
Moistened stone screenings pack down into a solid, smooth walkway for garden paths, utility routes, and lightly used areas. Once dense, the surface can handle wheelchairs and garden carts.
Why Choose Stone Dust
Dense, Even Compaction
Because the particles are so fine, stone screenings pack more tightly and smoothly than coarser aggregate. Choose them when your project calls for a flat, uniform base.
Cost-Conscious Material
Screenings are produced during rock crushing. They can be a lower-cost option than engineered base materials for appropriate uses.
Natural Binding Action
After wetting and compaction, stone screenings knit together into an almost solid layer. This helps the surface hold in place against erosion and shifting without adding binders.
Detail Material for Hardscapes
Use screenings to set pavers, fill joints, or make smooth paths. They are useful for the finishing work on hardscape projects.

Easy on the horses' legs
Four tons of stone screenings topped off the round pen behind the barn in West Greenwich. Packs down smooth and firm, easy on the horses' legs compared to the rocky base underneath. Held up through a whole summer of daily use.

Wheelbarrowed it in from the street
Topped a chicken run at the community garden plot in Lincoln with two tons of stone screenings so the hens would stop tracking mud into the coop every wet morning. Packs down nice underfoot and has kept the whole run mud free through a soggy spring.

Path and chicken run both fixed
Our school's outdoor garden club in Warwick has expanded raised beds for a few years, and this spring we finally fixed the muddy path to the chicken coop the kids help care for. Rhode Island Rock Supply scheduled the drop early on a Saturday before any weekend groups showed up, and the driver placed two piles right where our sketch showed so volunteers could spread the five tons by wheelbarrow. Packs down firm enough that even after a rainy week the path stays walkable, and the chicken run finally drains instead of turning into a swamp every time it storms.
