“The bank along our driveway in Hopkinton is steep enough that mowing it always felt like a hike, and after we finally terraced it with a low stone wall, I ordered three yards of top soil to build up behind the wall before seeding. Rain packed it in nice within a week, and by the second cutting the grass on that bank was thicker than the flat part of the yard ever was.”

Size and Grading

Small yards need clear separation between drainage work and soil reserved for growing. Top Soil has been screened for a smooth, workable texture, making it suitable for new turf, vegetable beds, ornamental planting, or leveling low spots in a landscape. Inland glacial till and ledge can contrast with sandy shore ground, while drainage may need to lead toward a dry well rather than across a neighboring lot.
Resolve rough grade and drainage before putting Top Soil in place. That practical sequence matters through freeze and thaw conditions, which can disturb a loose finish, especially on constrained properties. After base ground is set, distribute the soil across the planned growing surface and level it for planting or sod. Its role is to finish the landscape, not to substitute for a drainage path. It is not meant to correct ground that has not settled into its final contour.

Common Uses
Starting & Fixing Lawns
New sod, thin turf being overseeded, and low areas all need a workable surface layer. Apply 2-4 inches of topsoil so grass roots have room to take hold and produce dense green growth.
Garden Beds & Raised Planters
Use topsoil in raised planters and garden areas to create a suitable rooting layer for food crops, herbs, and flowering plants. The screened material has a loose texture that makes shaping and planting easier.
Grading & Leveling
Correct dips and uneven ground while setting grades that move water away from foundations and structures. On Rhode Island's small lots, direct drainage toward the planned dry well rather than adjoining property. Topsoil settles moderately and still lets water pass through.
Planting Trees & Shrubs
For tree and shrub planting, mix topsoil into the native ground. This improves soil texture and gives plants a better rooting environment as they establish early growth.
Why Choose Top Soil
Growing Medium
Topsoil forms a structured planting layer for turf, gardens, and decorative landscape plantings. It gives roots a soil base in which to establish and grow.
Screened & Clean
Mechanical screening takes out rocks, roots, and debris from the topsoil. The resulting material is even in texture and simpler to place and shape.
Versatile Application
Topsoil suits many uses, including home gardens and larger commercial work. Use it for planting areas, lawn work, and surface grading.
Bulk Value
Delivered bulk topsoil can cost less than bagged material when covering broad areas. It allows material to be brought to your property for large coverage needs.

Rockier than screened topsoil should be
Leveled out low spots across the whole side lawn in Tiverton with six yards of top soil this spring after years of the ground settling unevenly. Raked in smooth and grass took to it within a couple of weeks without any bare patches showing through.

Thicker grass than the bagged stuff
Top soil covered the backyard after an addition tore up the lawn at our place in Portsmouth, about twelve yards from Rhode Island Rock Supply spread over what used to be grass. Screened clean with none of the construction debris the excavator left mixed into the subsoil, which made seeding straightforward. Grass came in thick within a few weeks, thicker honestly than the bagged topsoil we used on a smaller patch a couple years back.

Grass grew back over the stump
Three yards of top soil filled in where a stump was ground out in the front yard in Bristol. Fine and workable, no rocks to fight while raking it level. Grass filled back in over the spot within a month.

Steep bank finally grows thick grass
The bank along our driveway in Hopkinton is steep enough that mowing it always felt like a hike, and after we finally terraced it with a low stone wall, I ordered three yards of top soil to build up behind the wall before seeding. Rain packed it in nice within a week, and by the second cutting the grass on that bank was thicker than the flat part of the yard ever was.
