“Raised a low corner of the yard at a rental in Westerly that flooded every spring from how close the water table sits to the surface. Went with twenty yards of fill dirt spread over two afternoons since the truck could only carry so much per trip. Cheaper by a wide margin than the screened loam a landscaper quoted for the same job, and the low spot has stayed dry through two wet seasons since.”

Minimal organic matter

On inland till or shore-side sand, earthwork has to fit the drainage plan for a compact site. Fill Dirt is screened earthen material that can raise a sagging section, restore an excavation, or establish a building area's preliminary contour. With little organic content, it is less prone to decomposition-related settling than planting soil. It is intended for bulk shaping work that comes before surface finishes.

For a grade near a dry well, shape the fill so runoff follows the planned route rather than crossing a neighboring lot. Firm it during installation, particularly where freeze-thaw cycling can disturb loose ground. If landscaping follows, spread topsoil across the final contour before seeding or installing plants. That keeps the structural fill separate from the soil used for growth.

Common Uses

Preparing and Grading a Site

Use fill dirt to set grades for building sites, home lots, and commercial spaces. It helps shape slopes and contours for drainage, building locations, and the planned landscape, especially where runoff needs to head toward a dry well rather than a neighbouring lot.

Foundation Backfill

For foundation walls, retaining walls, and structures below grade, use fill dirt that can be compacted. Since it contains little organic material, it is less prone to breaking down and settling than organic soil, helping keep the surrounding area supported over time.

Raising Low Areas

Use fill dirt to bring up spots where water pools, mud forms, or drainage is troublesome. Adjusting the grade helps send water away from buildings and occupied areas, which can reduce recurring moisture problems on small lots.

Hole & Void Filling

Bulk fill dirt works for closing in old pools, unused basements, large holes, and excavation gaps. Once properly compacted, it leaves a solid area for the next project, such as building work or putting in a lawn.

Why Choose Fill Dirt

Economical Material for Bulk Fill

Fill dirt is generally the lowest-cost bulk material for earthwork, so it suits high-volume jobs that do not need topsoil-grade soil. It can help keep grading and fill costs lower.

Excellent Compaction

Fill dirt is mineral-based material that can be packed tightly to help reduce later settlement. A well-compacted base helps carry structures, pavement, and soil placed above it without later sinking.

Stable & Non-Settling

Fill dirt has very little organic matter, so it is not prone to the breakdown and shrinking common with organic soils. That helps the grade set during the project hold its form over time.

Useful for Many Earthwork Jobs

Fill dirt works for rough grading, backfilling, and filling voids during site preparation. It provides the base needed before later construction or landscaping steps can begin.

Saved us a lot of machine time

Twenty five yards of fill dirt from Rhode Island Rock Supply graded a low pad before we poured a foundation for a new pole barn out in Foster. Compacted well once we ran the plate over it and the slab has not settled a bit since.

Cheaper than the screened loam quote

Underestimated the old pool footprint

It took ten before the yard finally sat level with the rest of the lawn, so I called back for four more and ate the forty dollar redelivery charge. Tenants moving in that week asked why there was a truck dumping dirt behind their unit, then stopped asking once grass seed went down over it. Lesson learned, measure the low spot twice before you call in an order.

Unscreened means expect a few roots

Raised a soggy low spot behind the shed on our property in Charlestown with eight yards of fill dirt this spring. Did the job exactly as expected once it was graded and packed down with the tractor. Had a fair number of small roots and rocks mixed through it since it is unscreened, which meant an extra pass with the rake before we could seed over it.

Pool Fill Settled Over Winter

Filled our old inground pool in Cumberland with about one hundred ten yards of fill dirt last fall. It settled some over winter, so we brought in a few more yards through Rhode Island Rock Supply before seeding this spring.
